Preparing Your Gutters for the Rainy Season

0

You know how it goes: April Showers, May Flowers. We are a week away from the official start of April, and the rain is on its way. But before we get the endless amount of rain, what can you do to prepare your gutters for the heavy rain? And what can you do to maintain your gutters in good shape? Take a look at the tips that we have prepared for you.

Clean: Cleaning the gunk out of your gutters is the #1 thing you must do. Get a ladder and clean out leaves, debris, and grime. Do not allow stuff to accumulate in your gutters; it gets harder to clean them out every season. Also, allowing all this gunk to accumulate can cause your gutters to move away from your home resulting in water infiltration into your foundation and walls.

Downspouts: Make sure your downspouts are working properly. They should be directing the water away from your home. If they are not expelling the water far away enough, you may need to add downspout extenders.

Leaks: Check for holes and cracks in the caulking. You want to avoid water leaking behind the gutters and rotting the boards. Also, be on the lookout for the other issues like corrosion, sagging, bending and missing fasteners.

Secure: Check that your gutters are firmly attached to your home. Just give them a little tug and see if they are loose. During heavy rainfall, loose gutters could detach and cause major damage to your home’s siding.

Trees: A good way to maintain your gutter free of debris is by cutting or trimming any overhanging branches. Cutting branches is also a good way to avoid them coming down on your home and wiping out your gutters or creating a hole on your roof.
