Before and After a Storm

Summer is ending, and while we will miss it, we are also ready for fall! But before we can enjoy fall, we still have to get through hurricane season. Although Culpeper won’t experience any hurricanes, we will most likely feel some of the effects of Hurricane Irma. We will most likely experience a lot of rain and maybe some harsh winds, but we still don’t know the effect that Irma will have on our area.

When preparing for a storm there is a few things you can do to minimize damage:

  • Clean out your gutters to allow the water to easily flow and avoid flooding.
  • Tie down or enforce outside furniture to avoid damage.
  • Rake leaves and clean any debris to cut down on flying objects.

Once the storm passes, and even if you don’t think there is damage, it’s important to perform an inspection of your home. Here is a list of the things to look for:

Roof & Gutters

  • Missing shingles
  • Split seams
  • Cracked or broken tile or shingles
  • Dents on gutters
  • Leak or holes in the roof
  • Broken gutters

Exterior Building/Siding:

  • Cracking, splitting, chipping and denting on siding.
  • Holes and discoloration.

Watch out for shards of glass!

  • Broken windows
  • Cracked glass
  • Broken panes and damaged frames

Aside from these things, inspect your HVAC system, fences and your car. If you do happen to have damage, take plenty of pictures. Documenting the damage will help you during the insurance claims process.
